Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is slowly becoming better known all over the world. CAM encompasses various types of therapies, such as yoga, reflexology, chiropractic therapy, herbal therapy, ayurveda, meditation, biofeedback, hypnosis, homeopathy, acupuncture, etc. The evidenced-based research, recognition of disconnect between patients and also the positive and negative aspects of CAM modalities are reasons behind the increased attention it has gained in medicals schools all over the United States. (Hart, 2009, p. 287).

The popular forms of CAM that most students actually want to get trained in are yoga, acupuncture, chiropractic and herbal therapies. Yoga is a very popular form of alternative medicine all over the world. It is a mind-body medicine for many all individuals. Although some types of CAM do not make a pure effort to test the validity of what they do, yoga has brought many positive benefits to most practicing individuals. Similarly, acupuncture and chiropractic therapies have also seen good results with their patients. Many other forms of CAM, which have no proof on their legitimacy and evidence of constructive results such as shamanism, palmistry and physic healing are trying to get the consumer protection laws that need these proposed services to be able to prove that their methods are effective before they market it to the unknowing consumers. (Trask, 2010, s.2, 3). Hart also argues that there are various rigorous academic peer-reviews on these therapies and just by naming it as CAM it takes away their legitimacy. ( as cited in Low Dog, Tieraona, 2009)
Adding to my previous point on yoga, true alternative medicine, combined with conventional medicine will give a more holistic approach in terms of dealing with a patient’s condition. Similarly, it will improve medicine overall. These implementations, need to be done from the learning years. This way doctors, will be able to mold it

The dictionary states that conventional medicine is offered by hospitals and practiced by those who have a medical doctor degree; it is also called western medicine. The opposite of conventional medicine is called complementary and alternative medicine (CAM). Complementary and Alternative medicine can be considered holistic medicine, which is usually not prescribed by physicians a part of hospitals. There has been an increase in those that have an aversion to conventional medicine that is offered by hospitals (Astin, 1998). There are multiple reasons as to why people dislike conventional medicine. Other common complementary and alternative treatments can include; acupuncture, chiropractors, yoga, tai chi and homeopathies (Eisenberg, 1997). Since CAM treatments were all that were known back in the day, they were considered godsends. However, in the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries the witch trials began. These trials changed the belief that CAM treatments were good until recent times (Alsleben and Donsbach, 1992). The respect of CAM treatments was lost during the witch trials because all those that were thought of as being witches used herbal medicine and in general complementary and alternative medicine. The history of conventional medical treatments started after complementary and alternative medical treatments stopped being respected (Alsleben and Donsbach, 1992). It is believed, that conventional treatments branched off of CAM treatments because of when they started being in use.
There is some research or knowledge about complementary and alternative medical treatments; however, more needs to be done. More research needs to be done so that a plethora of different people can make wise decisions. It is known that most CAM treatments are used for allergies. Complementary and alternative treatments are used to diagnose and treat those with asthma, season allergies, as well as specific allergies (Niggemann and Grüber, 2003).
