Two of the 2017 LCPS Salad Bar Writing Contest winners hold up their award certificates alongside staff members from Tombaugh Elementary School and the Nutrition Services Department.
As part of an ongoing effort to encourage healthy eating across the school district, the LCPS Nutrition Services Department recently held a writing contest to encourage the students to use the salad bars, found in every school across LCPS. The contest was open to kindergarten through 12th-grade students who were asked to share their thoughts about why salad bars are important and how the students encourage their peers to use the salad bar.
“The contest, and other efforts such as the Cooking With Kids tasting lessons, are funded by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program – Education (SNAP-Ed) grant we receive and manage from United States Department of Agriculture (USDA),” said LCPS SNAP-Ed Program Manager Claire LeGault. “We received some great feedback from students and teachers, and we are currently planning to make the contest a recurring event.”
Of the 442 entries submitted to the contest, a total of five entries—one for each age category—were selected as contest winners. The contest was judged by a panel of staff members from the Nutrition Services Department who selected the winning essays based on creativity, ability to answer the question and development of complete thoughts.
The K-1st grade winner was Jovanni Apodaca, a first-grade-student at Highland Elementary School; the 2nd-3rd grade winner was Eva Nolan, a third-grade student at Central Elementary School; the 4th-5th grade winner was Emily Richardson, a fourth-grade student at Tombaugh Elementary School; the Middle School winner was Edgar Galvan, a sixth-grade student at Mesa Middle School; and the High School winner was Kieran Binkley, a sophomore at Centennial High School.
Contest winners in the K-1st, 2nd-3rd, and 4th-5th grade categories each won novelty carrot-shaped pens, inscribed with the phrase, “Veggies are the ‘Write’ Choice!” for their entire school, and contest winners in the middle and high school categories each earned pens for their entire language arts class.
The finalists for the contest included: Autumn Montoya (Sonoma Elementary, 1st grade), Adriana Calvillo (Alameda Elementary, 1st grade), Natalie Brown (University Hills Elementary, 1st grade), Nathan Padilla and Alexa Franco (both 3rd graders at Central Elementary), Sarah Aranda (Desert Hills Elementary, 3rd grade), Serina Ortega (Tombaugh Elementary, 4th grade), Luciano Medina (Hermosa Heights Elementary, 5th grade), Joshua Ruiz (Hermosa Heights Elementary, 4th grade), Kassandra Valdez and Jaime Jimmy (both 7th graders at Lynn Middle), and Julisa Carnero (Rio Grande Preparatory Institute, 9th grade) and Ricky Nunez (RGPI, 11th grade).
SNAP-Ed is a federally funded grant program that supports evidence-based nutrition education and obesity prevention interventions and projects for persons eligible for the SNAP through complementary direct education, multi-level interventions, and community and public health approaches to improve nutrition, according to the USDA website.
